In 2009 and 2010, the museum supplemented its collection with several outstanding works of art. Some were bought with the museum’s own money, while others were financed by the Latvian Cultural Capital Fund on a competitive basis. Most of the acquisitions are of artworks from the latter decades of the 20th century and the early 21st century. These are important and artistically outstanding artworks from different areas of the visual arts – painting, graphic art, and sculpture. Bequests have continued to be the most important means for expanding the museum’s collection. In 2009 and 2010, the museum received gifts of several hundred artworks. Among the most important were a major collection of work by the photographer Egons Spuris, which was donated to the museum of Inta Ruka. One part of the collection, “Proletarian Districts of Rīga in the Late 19th and Early 20th Century,” is part of the Latvian Cultural Canon. The painter Voldemārs Avens presented the museum with a collection of his paintings. The Re&Re construction company, in turn, donated a substantial sum of money for the purchase of artworks. There have also been smaller bequests from artists and others. |
