The Textiles Printing Workshop

The textiles printing workshop, which has existed for many years, holds great interest to people of all ages.

This workshop focuses on the textile printing technique of Ansis Cīrulis (1883-1942), the master of graphic art, painting, and decorative art in Latvia. A.Cīrulis renewed the interest in silk screening in the 1930s by creating a studio and calling his technique “madarošana” (a word derived from the wildflower - madara, whose roots were used to obtain a red pigment). The Museum of Decorative Arts and Design offers the opportunity to experiment with this ancient technique, using screens inspired by the works of Latvia’s old masters (Ansis Cīrulis, Jūlija Straumes, and Jūlija Madernieka) in addition to the works of new Latvian artists.

Prior to the workshop we offer a special tour of and lecture in the permanent display for art schools and others with in-depth interest. During this tour, a museum specialist introduces participants to the silk screening technique and works of A.Cīrulis and current artists, in addition to analyzing the composition of the works, the meaning of the Latvian ornamentation, and the possibilities of the “madarošana” technique.
